Curated by Maksaens Denis
Haitian Experimental Video, January 2017
In celebration of the re-opening of the 319 building, after six months of darkness post-fire, Grizzly Grizzly is thrilled to present an evening of exuberant, multi-layered videos from Haiti, curated by Maksaens Denis, international filmmaker and multi-disciplinary artist born in Port Au Prince. This experimental, looped, one-hour screening introduces Philadelphia to current time-based work from Haiti. The group of artists assembled have studied and collaborated with acclaimed artist, Maksaens Denis at Le Centre d'Art in Port au Prince. The resulting short videos and films show the layered, fractured experience of the vibrant city, its deep connections to voodoo, and the influence of their mentor.
Artists in the screening include: Romel Jean-Pierre, Steevens Simeon, Joelle Ferly, Dymy Chouloute, Wendy N’djati Desert, Adler Pierre and Maksaens Denis. Maksaens Denis is a collaborator and friend of Edgar Endress, an artist who was recently a Rankin Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Drexel University. This video program was made possible with the support of Drexel's Westphal College of Media Arts and Design and their student run art organization, DART.
