A Crowd of Nobody, August 2016 

This August, Grizzly Grizzly presents ‘A Crowd of Nobody’, featuring original works by Linda Frank, Erin Hael, Joan Oh, Heather Raquel Phillips, and Amalia Wilson. Through a night of live performance curated by Phoebe Wang, the artists explore the link between isolation and the privilege of audience.

In ‘A Crowd of Nobody’, Linda Frank (Brooklyn, NY) makes public space her private space; Erin Hael (Brooklyn, NY) toes the line between disguise and exposure; live-streamed from a Korean karaoke room, Joan Oh (Philadelphia, PA) performs classic ‘90’s hits for no one [and everyone]; Heather Raquel Phillips (Philadelphia, PA) flies her failure flag high, with musical accompaniment by Meg Widholm and Mike Woloszczuk; and Amalia Wilson (Philadelphia, PA)  < * DECIDES * > to practice her vertical jump.

Artist Bio

Linda Frank was born in American Samoa in 1993. She is a performance artist currently living and working in Brooklyn. A graduate of Pratt Institute, Linda majored in sculpture with a focus in performance installation. Linda has appeared in scores by Sean Donovan, Jillian McManemin, Clifford Owens and Vaginal Davis. In 2015 Linda performed in the show ‘The Artist as Provocateur: Pioneering Performance at Pratt Institute’ where she showed alongside her peers and professors including Martha Wilson, Jennifer Miller and Theodora Skipitares. 

Erin Hael was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, and attended undergraduate and graduate school at the University of Minnesota for Experimental and Media Arts with a focus on performance. She studied performance with Rachel Rosenthal at her TOHUBOHU! extreme workshop in Los Angeles in 2011. In 2012, she received the workART KUNSTVEREIN FELLOWSHIP from the Center for German and European Studies at the University of Minnesota to work and live at a Kunstverein in Germany & study their performative practices. In 2015 she received an open studio residency at Trestle Gallery & Brooklyn Art Space.

Joan Oh is a Chicago native with a BFA in Photography at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, D.C. Subsequent to that, she attended the University of Pennsylvania and received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies. She currently lives and works in Philadelphia. 

Heather Raquel Phillips lives and works in Philadelphia. She received her BFA from Tyler School of Art and her MFA from University of Pennsylvania where she was awarded the Toby Devon Lewis Fellowship and the Stuart Egnal Scholarship Award. As a mixed race artist who works in photography, video, text, and performance, Phillips takes her experience of marginality to create spaces for bodies that refuse negation. Heather is currently involved with the collective S.A.G.E. out of Philadelphia and New York City.

Amalia Wilson is a multi-media artist living and working in Philadelphia. She has performed original works in twenty-three spaces across the United States and Canada.
