The Dead Have Dreams, August 2013

This August – for one night only - Grizzly Grizzly will present a film screening guest curated by Oof, a Philadelphia-based animation collective.  The Dead Have Dreams features 14 artists, Emilia Brintnall, Lilli Carré, Jo Dery, Juliette Goddard, Jason Hsu, Amy Lockhart, Lauren Kinley, Jodie Mack, Jillian Mayer, Ng’endo Mukii, Serge Onnen, Anastasia Owell, Nathania Rubin, Ben Wheele, and Karen Yasinsky.  Oof collective member, Jennifer Levonian, states “the screening program tests the limits of reality and our ability to perceive them.”  Curated for their range of surrealist themes, the videos in this screening reflect the depth of ideas and techniques in contemporary animation.

This screening will take place on August 2, 2013.  The program will loop every 20 minutes.

Oof is a Philadelphia-based animation collective made up of members Harvey Benschoter, Amy Cousins, Jennifer Levonian, Christopher McManus, Jennie Thwing, and Ash Wilson. Oof makes experimental animations and hosts public screenings & workshops.

Artist Bios

Emilia Brintnall is an artist and member of Space 1026 in Philadelphia.

Lilli Carré is an artist currently living in Chicago. She works in the forms of experimental animation, comics, print, drawing, and (recently) sculpture. Her work has been exhibited and shown in festivals throughout the US and abroad, and she is the co-founder of the Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation. Her most recent book is the story collection Heads or Tails, published by Fantagraphics Books. 

Jo Dery is an interdisciplinary artist who experiments with storytelling. She makes drawings, prints, little books, and short films. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Animation in DePaul University’s School of Cinema and Interactive Media, in Chicago, IL. 

Juliette Goddard trained at the Royal College of Art and currently lives in London. The current themes of her expressionist work are reflections from her childhood in East Africa.

Jason Hsu is an artist and a member of Space 1026 in Philadelphia.

Lauren Kinley is a graduate of Illustration from the University of Brighton, England. She has always enjoyed researching dreams, and having studied psychology at secondary school, a prominent interest was carried through when she studied art. Similarly, she wrote her dissertation on Virtual Reality, and determining reality from fantasy in an ever-ambiguous age of technology. She continues to practice illustration and animation in a professional environment, and is currently working at work on various moving image projects.

Jodie Mack is an independent moving-image practitioner who received her MFA in film, video, and new media from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007 and currently teaches animation at Dartmouth College. Combining the formal techniques and structures of abstract/absolute animation with those of cinematic genres, her handmade films use collage to explore the relationship between graphic cinema and storytelling, the tension between form and meaning.

Jillian Mayer calls upon drawing, photography, video, online platforms, installation, and performance to enact scenarios of apathy, dysfunction, and disillusionment by often using satire. Her works have been screened at festivals and museums worldwide, including Sundance, SXSW, MoMA, Bass Museum and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, Italy; Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain; and Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin, Germany. 

Ng’endo Mukii is an artist and animator living and working in Kenya.  Her work has been screened in several international film festivals across Europe, Africa, and North America, including the 7th Kenya International Film Festival and Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, Germany.  Mukii holds a graduate degree from the Royal College of Art, UK.

Serge Onnen is a French/Dutch artist who works in drawing. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City; San Diego Museum of Arts; and The Drawing Center, New York City.

Anastasia Owell was born in Hong Kong and moved to L.A. in her teens. She received her BFA in General Sculpture study from Maryland Institute College of Arts, 2003, and her MFA from University of Pennsylvania in 2008. 

Nathania Rubin is an artist working primarily in hand-drawn animation and drawing/video installation. Her work investigates the relationships between narrative, fiction, and the formation of self. She explores the shifting nature of identity through morphing drawings and their erasure. Originally from New York City, she spent 2011-12 as a fine art researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academie in the Netherlands.

Ben Wheele is an artist and animator based in the UK. He graduated the Royal College of Art with an MA in Animation in 2011, and has since exhibited at the Liverpool Biennial and the Sunday Painter Gallery, London. His animations have also screened at festivals internationally, including Rotterdam, Annecy, Melbourne and London International Animation Festival. 

Karen Yasinsky is an artist working primarily with animation and drawing. Her video installations and drawings have been shown in many venues internationally including the Mori Art Musuem, Tokyo, P.S. 1 Contemporary Art, NY, UCLA Hammer Museum, LA, the Wexner Center, Columbus, OH and Kunst Werke, Berlin. Her animations have been screened worldwide at various venues and film festivals including the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Film Festival's Views from the Avant Garde and the International Film Festival Rotterdam. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Baker Award, and is a fellow of the American Academy in Berlin and the American Academy in Rome. She teaches at Johns Hopkins University in Film/Media Studies.
